WFFC recieves USDA Rural Enterprise Grant to Promote Locally Grown Beans, Grains, and Flours
The Willamette Farm and Food Coalition was awarded a small USDA grant to promote products produced by Camas Country Mill, a grain milling and bean cleaning facility currently being installed in Junction City by Hunton's Farm. WFFC will assist the budding business venture in increasing consumer awareness and building local market demand for their products.
As a service to the farmers, WFFC is helping to determine if selling small quantities to individual consumers at farmers' markets is financially viable. The USDA grant covers expenses and WFFC staff time required to run the farmers' market booth. All proceeds go directly back to the farmers.
WFFC will also organize community buying clubs. If your neighborhood organization, grange, or faith community is interested in buying grains in bulk, at wholesale prices, please contact us at (541) 341-1216.
The Farms:
Stalford Seed Farms, Tangent
Family owned and operated, the Stalfords took the lead 5 years ago when they began to transition acreage to organic and to experiment with growing hard red wheat. They are currently growing hard red and soft white wheat, oats and dry-land beans. Greenwillow Grains is the Stalford's milling facility in Brownsville. Stalford Seed Farms and Greenwillow Grains work with Ten Rivers Food Web, Local 6, and the Southern Willamette Valley Bean & Grain Project, organizations that seek to revitalize a regional food system.
Hunton’s Farm, Junction City
A third generation family farm, the Hunton’s are producing teff, hard red wheat, buckwheat, and a variety of beans and lentils on transitional acreage. 2010 is year two of the transition to organic. Huntons’ Farm is installing a grain mill and bean cleaning facility (Camas Country Mill) to serve Willamette Valley growers which will be operational by early-November.
A2R Farms, Corvallis
The Robinson family is working to transition their 800 acre conventional grass seed farm to organic bean, grain and seed crops to supply local markets. This year they have red and white wheat, oats, brown flax seed and several bean varieties.
Lonesome Whistle Farm, Eugene
Lonesome Whistle Farm is working to preserve and promote rare and unique dry bean varieties that aren't readily available. This year they planted 8 varieties of dry beans on about 3 acres. They are growing Vermont Cranberry, Arikara, Green Flageolet, Rio Zape, and Jacob's Cattle on certified organic acres. Dutch Bullet, Ireland Creek Annie, and Calypso are being grown on non-certified land. All beans are grown organically.
