Dear Neighbors of Reading, Eating, and Seeding,
David is the co-founder of Tsunami, who, after many years in the book business, went to Hawaii with his wife Caban to learn about organic farming. The bee interest relates, and I believe they are hoping to get a bee sanctuary established in Oregon.
Take a look!
ErikDear Honeybee Supporters,
Over the last two years we have created an organization called Save the Honeybee Foundation, a 501(c)3, a publicly supported non-profit. The purpose of this organization is to help restore honeybee health by providing pristine habitat for honeybees and the plants they forage on, and also developing and teaching vitalistic beekeeping methods that do not stress the hive. We strongly believe (and clinical evidence is beginning to bear this out) that stress caused from industrialized beekeeping methods as well as long-term exposure to environmental toxins have compromised the immune response of the bee, leading to disastrous disease states world-wide.
In our first two years as an organization, we have made steady progress toward our goals. Highlights of this progress include a research study on Kauai, aimed at understanding beekeeping methods and philosophy on the island. Kauai honeybees are some of the healthiest bees on the planet and we are wondering if part of the bees' success is due to the unique style and philosophy of beekeepers on the island. So far, our interviews with local beekeepers have revealed that beehives on Kauai are less intensely managed than on the mainland. Hives are far more "wild," living in a relatively undisturbed, natural, and stress-free state. Our own direct experience with the hives has also been very interesting and noticeably different than from what we were accustomed to in Oregon. We encourage you to visit our website (
www.honeybeesanctuary.org) for more details about this and other projects. Another highlight from our first year is our sponsorship of an important new documentary film, "Vanishing of the Bees," narrated by Ellen Page, released in the US this past August. Please visit their website:
http://www.vanishingbees.com/And watch the film. It is a thoughtful and beautifully rendered exploration of the many causes of Colony Collapse Disorder.
As we are looking forward to our next couple of years as an organization we intend to further the development of our mission of providing pristine habitat for honeybees and the plants that they forage on by building our first Oregon Honeybee Sanctuary. We are excited to announce that we have secured an incredible piece of land on which to build this first sanctuary, and we will begin building in the spring/summer of 2011! We could not be more delighted about the land, which is ideal for the sanctuary. It is secluded, far from any major sources of pollution, with fresh, clean water and temperate climate. We can't wait to get started!
Now, in order to take the next step in this process, we will need to depend on the generous financial support of honeybee allies everywhere! As we are a 501(c)3, all donations to our project are tax deductible and must come primarily from public support, which means YOU! So please give generously to this work dedicated to restoring honeybee health.
100% of donations from this fundraising effort will go directly to the building of the sanctuary. Specifically, we will start with a 6-foot, smooth-surfaced garden wall to enclose the half-acre area of the sanctuary and protect the honeybees from the local population of black bear and elk. Once the wall is built, funds raised will go toward the purchase of alternative hive bodies for the honeybees, and the support structure needed to grow the medicinal herbs and other bee forage that will fill the sanctuary. Our goal is to raise $18,000. Some of this will come from grants, both from government agencies, as well as from private foundations. But most will come from small donations by individuals like yourself.
Please take this opportunity to do something direct to help restore honeybee health. Your donation is tax deductible. For more details about the sanctuary and about our vision and mission at Save the Honeybee Foundation, please visit our website:
