When Geni Morrow & Charlie McGee purchased the Reach Center and began offering a wide variety of classes there, they also envisioned a garden in the entry yard from which the kitchen could be supplied with fresh herbs and vegetables, and folks could sit enjoying flowers and birds, or picnic under a tree.
With the help of Amazon Neighbors, the work to create a garden has begun. David Stucky created a drawing to work from. Charlie is busy planning a greenhouse. Various people have delivered leaves, manure, and coffee grounds to compost slowly over the winter. Plans for traditional compost bins and a worm bin, fruit trees and small fruit, a garden shed, raised beds, and bee hives are being formulated.
This is a high visibility garden, and all involved hope the site can be a community resource. Network Charter School teaches cooking at the Reach. Integrating where food comes from is a natural addition. Teaching year-round gardening classes to community members will be possible, plus we'll have fresh vegetables available for a variety of events.
So look for garden developments on the site. If you have wood, labor, skill with concrete foundations (greenhouse), plumbing knowledge, etc. please join the effort. Above all, enjoy the process of garden making as it evolves more or less on stage.
