Greetings all,

Happy (almost) spring! You're receiving this note because, in one way or another, you've expressed an interest in having bees here in the Amazon watershed/neighborhood.

It's about time again to build new hives for the upcoming bee season! Bee delivery this year from GloryBee will occur on April 15. I'm putting in two hives this year myself and will get bees from GloryBee, but probably try to find 'survivor' queens from a local breeder.

The hive building will work pretty much the same way this year as it did last year: you can have a hive for cost of materials if you're willing to work with others to build it. Materials cost about $75/hive.

I'll be ordering wood for this year's hives soon. If you'd like to have a beehive this year (or add another one), please respond to this email and tell me two things:

How many hives you'd like.
What style hive you'd like: Warre topbar (stack vertically) or Kenya-style topbar (lay horizontally)
Last year we only built Warre hives. This year I'll be building a Kenya style hive for myself and am eager to give it a go. A couple of my favorite beekeepers in whole world use the horizontal topbar hives and that's good enough for me!

We had a great time building hives last year and I'm looking forward to this year's adventures as well. Once I get an idea of how many hives we have to build, I'll send out a note with some proposed hive-build days spread through March and April.

Don't worry about experience building things. If you're handy, fantastic! If not, that's fine too as long as you're willing to roll up your sleeves.

If you're aware of others who might be interested in bees, please forward this email!

Kind regards,

David Stucky
Here's a picture of the Kenyan-style, though ours will look somewhat different (http://permaculture.org.au/2010/06/21/home-made-bee-hives/)
