Sherry Wellborn
Spring is progressing at the Reach Center garden. Three new raised beds are planted to four types of peas, spinach, lettuce, and other greens. Work is moving forward to plant fruit trees near the east wall of the building, and bees are now at home in a Kenyan top bar hive near the south fence.

Now that plants are growing, we'll be needing a compost bin soon. There are plans for adding a flow-through worm bin at a later date, but we'll be getting a more traditional system in sooner. Well, sort of traditional. I'm hoping we can put in an inexpensive fencing hoop (that's not untraditional) with some passive air.

The passive air is a horizontal pipe and a vertical pipe joined with a tee. The pipes have holes drilled. The heat from the compost rises through the pipe creating a chimney effect, and drawing oxygen into the pile. That keeps the aerobic composting going. An easy set up, for the most part.

Look for that and more additions, such as native strawberries, arbors, seating, and a greenhouse (at some point) in the future.
