Eugene City Parking Manager Jeff Petry met with the Amazon Neighbors Steering Committee December 14 to discuss the impacts of the extended two-hour parking limitations in the South University Neighborhood.
In Amazon, on the south side of 24th Ave. and just to the south of that street, as well as along streets near the Harris bus line, there are more cars parking for long periods. These are cars that are forced out of SUNA because of the newly extended two-hour limits. The E-Parking program has a good aim--to reduce car trips to the University and to encourage more walking, biking, and bus riding.
Neighbors and Steering Committee Members at the December 14 meeting voiced several concerns: Fairmount and SUNA are pushing cars into our neighborhood, taking up places used by Amazon residents, parking illegally at corners, and blocking views for drivers trying to enter 24th Avenue from the south.
Petry indicated that Public Works is already working on extending yellow curbs on 24th so that visibility could be improved. E-Parking can be extended block by block when a majority of its residents vote for the two-hour restriction and accept the purchase of a $40 per year permit for unlimiteds parking in the zone. Also, the city can declare any neighborhood or part of it such a zone. On December 14, the Amazon Steering Committee did not discuss whether Amazon should enroll in the E-Parking program.
