I owned a bike shop in Southern California from 1975 to 1990 named Two Wheel Transit Authority. My wife, Mary, and I were attracted to Eugene as an antidote to life in Orange County. We thought it would be a great place to raise our children, and we were interested in the Waldorf School, so we moved here in 1991.
Mary is a teacher at Camas Ridge Community School, and I have been involved in the Eugene bike scene since our arrival – working in the bike industry, riding, and advocating for policies and facilities which support cycling for transportation. In 1996, our family became car-free.
After initially steering clear of bicycle retail in Eugene, I became intrigued by the possibility of a different sort of store. Finally, after many years, I felt enough products had become available to make a bike shop focused on transportation feasible. I rented our space at 27th & Willamette in March of 2009, and Seth, our first employee, and I set up the store. In July, someone walked in and asked, “Do you fix bikes?”. Seth and I looked at each other. “Yea, I guess so,” we replied. So, Seth fixed the bike and we were open for business.
That July, Matt created our sidewalk sandwich board that states in bold stencil: BIKE SHOP!!! on one side, and BIKE TUNE UPS on the other. We didn’t get our name up until October.
By August of last year we started to have a little more merchandise and my daughters, Courtney and Kelsey, began helping out with sales and merchandising. In December, we had our Grand Opening, and our merchandise has steadily increased since then. Our objectives are to provide bike commuters with a huge amount of choice in outfitting, and to make biking accessible to everyone, including those with children, dogs and various kinds of gear to haul. We want to remove whatever obstacles people have to using their bikes regularly.
Arriving By Bike will have its one-year anniversary celebration this summer. We’ll be at the Oregon Country Fair Energy Park Annex for Transportation and on the Amazon Neighborhood Bike Tour on Saturday, August 21st. We invite you to come in, see what we have, tell us about your bike needs and bike dreams. We’d like to meet you.
