The photo shows me after a 10K run, or glide, on the GlideCycle (GC). The one I use is a two-year old prototype.
The GC is an invention by David Vidmar who lives in Ashland. David advanced the concept of the original bicycle, a running bike called the Draisienne, circa 1810. This uses newer technology and is not intended as a alternative to a standard bicycle.
The GC is a cross trainer which takes the rider/runner's weight off of the joints while walking or running. It's a workout that focuses on gluts and hamstrings, a complement to cycling or running. The GC has bike wheels, steering, and brakes should you go downhill.
It has also proven useful for amputees who have lost one leg, and are unable to pedal a standard bicycle. With some initial help they can Glide on their own.
Those interested in trying a GlideCycle should contact Eugene Adaptive Recreation at the Hilyard Center, 26th and Hilyard.
